About This Tour
Samburu National Reserve is unlike anywhere else in Kenya — a rugged, semi-arid landscape of doum palms, termite mounds, and the Ewaso Nyiro River that attracts extraordinary concentrations of wildlife. The reserve is famous for the 'Samburu Special Five': five species found here but not in the Mara or Serengeti — Grevy's zebra (the world's largest and most endangered), reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk (the long-necked 'giraffe gazelle'), and Somali ostrich. The Samburu people, closely related to the Maasai, are among the most striking in Kenya — beaded, ochre-smeared, and proud. This safari combines Samburu's rare wildlife with one of Africa's great bird spectacles: the million-flamingo congregation at Lake Nakuru, now also home to both black and white rhino, Rothschild's giraffe, and resident lion prides.
